As the temperature rises and the days grow longer, communities across East Texas are gearing up for another battle against mosquitoes. These tiny insects not only cause irritation with their bites but also pose a significant health risk, spreading diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus.

DID YOU KNOW that mosquitos can breed in just ONE teaspoon of water? You can do your part to reduce mosquito populations and minimize the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses by draining standing water around your home.

Mosquito prevention/protection tips:

  1. Eliminate Breeding Sites: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so eliminating standing water around your home is crucial. Regularly emptying containers such as flower pots, bird baths, and clogged gutters can prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

  2. Use Mosquito Repellent: When spending time outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to protect yourself from bites.

  3. Wear Protective Clothing: Covering exposed skin with long sleeves, pants, and socks can provide an additional barrier against mosquito bites, particularly in areas where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent.

  4. Install Screens: Ensure that windows and doors are equipped with screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home. Repair any holes or tears in existing screens to maintain their effectiveness.

  5. Support Community Efforts: Participate in community clean-up events aimed at removing trash and debris that can collect water and serve as mosquito breeding grounds. Encourage neighbors to join in these efforts to create a more mosquito-resistant environment.

  6. Educate Others: Spread awareness about the importance of mosquito prevention and the potential health risks associated with mosquito bites. Share information with friends, family, and neighbors to empower them to take action.
