The
Whitehouse entry into the Brentwood Crossing Shopping Center containing
Sams & Wal-Mart is currently scheduled to be closed on May 12th. Once
this entryway is closed you will have two points of entrance or exit
into the Wal-Mart/Sams Complex for the next four to six weeks.
The first point of entry is the Sam’s/Tractor Supply
entrance from U.S. 59. This entryway will be for traffic coming from the
north (or from town). Traffic can enter and exit there. The exit will be
a right turn only and traffic will have to go back to FM 819 in order to
return to Loop 287. The other alternative for entry and exit into the
Sam’s/Wal-Mart complex would be to use FM 819 and Daniel McCall Drive
(through the college) to reach the entryway between UFO Pizza and the
Wal-Mart Garden Center.
These two entryways will be the only access into the complex for the
next four to six weeks. Check Channel 15 and cityoflufkin.com for the
latest updates.

The
Regional Recycling Center has received a tremendous response to the
“voluntary recycling” phase of its cart replacement campaign. As of
April 30, more than 700 residents had already called in saying they
wanted to keep their blue carts and continue participating in the
city’s curbside recycling program.
Lufkin residents this week should have received a letter from Solid
Waste Services explaining the upcoming cart replacement program. All
grey carts citywide will soon be replaced with larger, 96-gallon
carts unless residents choose to keep the smaller carts. In
addition, all blue recycling carts will be removed unless residents
call and “volunteer” to continue participating in the curbside
recycling program.
Crews will begin replacing grey carts in May. All blue carts will be
picked in August unless residents call Solid Waste Services and
request to remain part of the curbside recycling program.
Call Solid Waste Services at 633-0281 to keep your blue cart, keep
your smaller grey cart or for more information about the cart
replacement program.
Let’s keep Lufkin recycling! |

The annual
Downtown Hoedown was a great success. This year's festivities
began with Robert
Earl Keen in concert at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center and was
followed on Saturday with the annual Hoedown Parade. The
festivities included all day arts and crafts vendors, live entertainment
on two stages, a Civil War Reenactment in Louis Bronaugh Park,
wrestling
and much more. We have a
video of the event and you can read more about it in the
Lufkin Daily News. |

Crime
Stoppers of Lufkin Inc. will soon celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Crime Stoppers of Lufkin is a privately funded non-profit
organization dedicated to maintaining a 24 hour hotline where
anonymous callers can provide tips on serious crimes and receive
cash rewards for information that leads to arrests. Crime
Stoppers of Lufkin started on June 25, 1983. The program consists of
a board of directors and a program coordinator. The board members
are all private Lufkin citizens who donate their time and efforts to
help local law enforcement and the community by providing this
hotline and information to law enforcement. The law enforcement
coordinator is provided by the Lufkin Police Department.
Since it's inception, the local hotline has taken almost 7800 tips,
resulting in over 900 arrests, clearing over 1200 cases while
authorizing almost $140,000 in cash rewards to callers. Tips
to Lufkin Crime Stoppers have also resulted in the recovery of just
over one quarter of a million dollars in drugs and stolen
merchandise.
Crime Stoppers has been very successful over the
years, taking home numerous state awards for the number of crimes
cleared. |

Statistical
information on accidents after the installation of the
red light cameras is now available. The total number of
rear-end collisions in November 2006, December 2006 and January 2007
added up to 29, and the total number of T-bone accidents during
those months added up to 5. In comparison, results from November and
December 2007 and January 2008 show only seven rear-end collisions
and no T-bone accidents. We have a
video
of Chief Brazil presenting the information at the February 19
Council Meeting. You can read more about it in the
Lufkin Daily News.
We also have a detailed
PDF map
showing the location of the red light cameras in Lufkin. |
