Library News
Everyone is invited to come in for Kurth Memorial
Library’s Second Annual Open House on September 24th from 9am to
3pm. Whether you’ve never been in before, you just haven’t been in lately,
or you’re a regular visitor, we invite you to come see all of the things
that the library has to offer.
Libraries are no
longer just buildings full of books: your
local library now offers children’s craft programs, teen programs, senior
programs, classes, movies and more.
Your local library holds a
wealth of knowledge in various formats including
books, CDs,
cassette tapes, Playaways, DVDs, VHS tapes, magazines, computers, Internet
access, microfilm, maps and more—all
available at your fingertips.
We will be offering tours of the library, staff will be
available to answer questions and we will be hosting family bingo sessions
at 11am and 1pm. Please come in and see what your library has to offer.
We have
lots of free events scheduled, including the following:

September 10 – Saturday
Family Programming – 11:30am.
Join
us as we read A Friend for All Seasons by Julia Hubery and
make a simple craft.

September 12
- Bilingual Pajama Story Night – Hooray for Grandparents’ Day!
by Nancy Carlson, 5:30pm – 6:30 pm. Kids, come in and make a card
for your favorite adult.

September 17
– Saturday programming for Teens – 11:30am. Teens are invited
to come in and make a keychain.

September 21
- Coffee and Conversation – Game Day – 10am.
Adults 55+ are invited to come in and play some good old-fashioned
games.

September 24
– Open House – 9:00am-3:00pm.

September 26
– Email for beginners – 5:30pm-6:30pm. Space is limited. Please
call for reservations.

We wanted to thank everyone who
participated in our Summer Reading Programs. We had 743 children and teens
sign up this year, and we hope that all the participants had as much fun as
we did. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
This year’s Summer Reading Programs were
generously supported by the Friends of the Kurth Memorial Library and the
following community businesses: Chic-Fil-A, Ralph & Kacoos, Whataburger,
Papa John’s Pizza, Lufkin Lanes Bowling Alley, McDonalds, Sonic, Burger
King, Taco Casa, Taco Bueno, Ray’s Drive-in West, the Ellen Trout Zoo, the
Skate Ranch, Bath and Body Works, HEB, Target, Brookshire Brothers and the
Great American Cookie Company. Thank you all for your support!
New books at the library this week
include the following fiction titles: Kill Me If You Can by James
Patterson & Marshall Karp, The Garden of Secrets Past by Anthony
Eglen, The End of Everything by Megan Abbott, The Eternal
Engagement by Mary B. Morrison, Busy Monsters by William Giraldi,
Home Improvement: Undead Edition by Charlaine Harris, and Cold
Vengeance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. New non-fiction titles
include A Place of Remembrance: The Official Book of the National
September 11 Memorial with a forward by Michael R. Bloomberg, The
Secrets of the FBI by Ronald Kessler, The Fatal Gift of Beauty: The
Trials of Amanda Knox by Nina Burleigh and If I Have to Tell You One
More Time… by Amy McCready. New biographies include In My Time
by Dick Cheney, Unmeasured Strength by Lauren Manning, Happy Chaos
by Soleil Moon Frye, The Memory of All That by Katherine Weber,
Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl by Sandra Beasley, and Ghosts in the
Works by Kevin Mitnick.
Kurth Memorial Library is open 10am to
7pm on Mondays, 9am to 6pm Tuesday through Thursday, 9am to 5:30 on Friday,
and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. We do not charge for membership if you live in
Angelina County, however, you must have a valid photo ID with current
address in order to apply. Parents
or legal guardians must apply for library cards for children under 16.
Replacement cards are $1. Children under the age of 13 may not be left at
the library without adult supervision.
The library will be closed on Monday,
September 5, 2011 in
observance of the Labor Day Holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 6th
at 9am.
