The City of Lufkin is discontinuing glass recycling as of Feb. 28th due to continued contamination.

When the City took its last load to the recycling center in Houston, officials were told there was too much contamination for the recycling center to accept it.

“Eliminating contamination from the glass is unsafe and labor intensive for our workers and fuel costs have risen significantly making the program unsustainable,” Solid Waste Director Kent Havard said.

The roll-off trucks that make the trip to Houston get roughly four miles to the gallon of diesel.

“The fuel cost to Houston and back is about $280, not counting the wage we pay our driver,” Havard said.

The City receives $15 a ton from the recycling center in Houston and hauls about 16 tons each trip. Between fuel cost and the driver’s wages, the City loses about $200 every trip.

The City is continuing its aluminum and metal, cardboard, and plastic recycling.

“Since we discontinued curbside recycling, we’ve seen cleaner recyclables at our drop sites with the exception of glass,” Havard said. “We appreciate the community’s continued dedication to recycling.”

The City has two recycling drop-off locations at 500 Southpark Drive and 800 Amey St.
