Charter Amendments 2024

Summary of Charter Amendments
The City of Lufkin Charter was last amended in 1995. During the almost thirty (30) years since the last amendments; numerous provisions of the Charter are now in conflict with the Texas Local Government Code, the Texas Tax Code, Texas Election Code and other State laws (Texas Open Meetings Act, etc.) governing municipalities. There are twelve (12) proposed amendments to update the City Charter so that it will be synonymous with current State law, current City practices and protocols.

WHAT IS THE CITY CHARTER?

The City Charter is the constitution of the City; it establishes the general powers, duties and administrative structure of the City. The Charter can only be amended by a majority vote of qualified voters who reside within the City of Lufkin. The Charter was initially adopted in 1919 and was last amended in 1995.

An individual may file for the City Council Election beginning at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, through Friday, February 17th, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.  Candidates may file the required documents in person, by mail, email and/or fax.
