From infrastructure to manpower, The City of Lufkin is prepared for Winter Storm Landon which is expected to arrive in East Texas tomorrow.

Last February, Winter Storm Uri left Lufkin residents without water and power for several days. With the lessons learned from Uri, the City has made changes to its infrastructure to ensure that does not happen again, according to Asst. City Manager Gerald Williamson.

“Last year’s winter storm showed us vulnerabilities with our water supply,” Williamson said. “Those facilities have been improved and generators are ready to keep our water supply flowing. Other critical facilities have been upgraded and prepared to meet the needs of our community.”

The City’s first responders along with street and public works departments have been placed on standby and are ready to respond if needed. TxDOT also began preparations earlier this week.

“Our partner agency TxDOT treated overpasses and bridges to prevent the formation of ice,” Williamson said. “We do not intend to open the convention center as a shelter right away. We will re-evaluate if the cold becomes much worse or lasts longer than is currently being forecast with significant power outages.”

Today the National Weather Service Shreveport issued a winter weather advisory for much of East Texas including Angelina County. The NWS cautioned that rain could transition to sleet and snow Thursday evening.

Power outages and damage from fallen trees are possible. Travel is likely be difficult. Motorists should allow for extra drive time late Thursday into Friday morning, avoid bridges and overpasses if possible and slow down on potentially icy roadways.

“Hopefully we don’t experience a severe impact from this winter storm, but citizens should keep in mind that the coldest part of our winter season is just getting started,” Williamson said. “Now is the time to make preparations for inclement weather.”

Winter weather prep list:
  • Insulate outdoor waterlines to prevent freezing
  • Have your chimney or flue inspected
  • If you own a generator, ensure it is in working order and exhaust is ventilated properly
  • Ensure smoke detectors and battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors are working
  • Ensure you have food, water, a flashlight with extra batteries, portable cellphone charger
  • Bring in your pets and plants
