Education continues to be an integral part of the Ellen Trout Zoo's statement of purpose.   Ellen Trout Zoo began offering formalized educational programs in 1977 to schools in the East Texas area.  This important educational resource has expanded its role and offerings over the past years to include a broad spectrum of both formalized and informal programs.

ZS FOETZ DATES
Camp for 1st - 6th-grade students which take place Monday - Friday, 9 - 12 noon or 1:30 - 4:30 pm.
Check out our class descriptions below:
Critter Classification (going into first or second grade)
Discover the slinky, furry and fluffy critters of Ellen Trout Zoo and around the world.
Campers will come face-to-face with creatures\ great and small, play games, be creative with animal crafts and explore their zoo!
Wild Detectives (going into third and fourth grade)
Become Eco-explorers and investigate endangered animals and their endangered wild homes.
Campers will meet rare and endangered animals, go behind the scenes and discover ways to help conserve and protect our animal friends.
Zoo Engineers (going into fifth and sixth grade)
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you ran the zoo? Campers will design exhibits for their
favorite zoo animals, set up and take touch carts throughout the zoo, develop an enrichment project, and more.

Junior Zookeeper

a competitive program designed to provide students going into the seventh, eighth, and ninth
grades an opportunity to explo
re a career path as a zookeeper. If selected, students may participate in the program for a maximum of two years.

venomoussnakesThe Ellen Trout Zoo has a brochure available describing the venomous snakes found in East Texas. The PDF brochure is available in both English and Spanish.  The brochure was written by Gordon Henley, Zoo Director, and is illustrated with photographs by Celia Falzone, General Curator.  Editorial assistance was provided by J. Colin Crawford, Education Assistant.  The brochures provide written and photographic descriptions of the 5 species of venomous snakes found in Angelina County.
